"If I wasn't a transvestite terrorist, would you marry me?"
basic stats
Name: Amycus Maslin Carrows Age: 35, November 4 1952. Wand: Ash, 10", raven's tail feather. Left-handed. Alumnus: Slytherin, class of 1969. Patronus: Crane (solitude, justice, longevity, vigilance, and intelligence) occupation: Healer-in-charge of St. Mungo's fourth floor, Spell Damage. Financial Situation: Amycus comes from a very wealthy family and his job is fairly well-paying (not to mention he works one heck of a lot of overtime), so he is quite comfortable for the time being. Accomodation: An expensive two-bedroom flat in Knockturn Alley. Right now it's just him and his fantastically fluffy feline friend, The Major (IV). Affiliation and Beliefs: He was a Death Eater and he is still loyal, but doesn’t know what to do with his time. Amycus and his sister were raised by pureblood fundamentalists. Nothing except the best was accepted, and this mentality extended to their positical beliefs. Both parents came from families with long wizarding backgrounds, and both parents believed firmly that wizards had magic for a reason; that they didn't need to compensate with technology to get what they needed, and as a result wizards were superior over Mudbloods for a very good reason. Amycus believes this like the good little soldier he was brought up to be, and has thought that way all his life.
family & home
Father: Nelson Carrow, Chief Healer at St. Mungo’s. Mother: Lucille Carrow, née Rousseau, retired model and fashion designer (wizarding). Sister: Alecto Carrow, Amycus isn’t quite sure what she does.
Personal Background: It was clear from a young age that Amycus excelled at many things, and was horrible at many things. In his earliest years his reading motor skills far surpassed those of his peers, but brooms and magical animals made him cower in the corner and refuse to come out until they were put back in the closet. Before Hogwarts he was privately tutored, but he went through tutors quickly – partly because he learned so quickly, and partly because he was so sure of his skills that his obnoxious demeanour was ‘too much to handle’ for some of the more motherly teachers.
When he was a child he was short but large, and ridiculed endlessly about his stature by his peers. Criticism by his parents’ crowd of supposedly beautiful, flawless, pinky-out elitists was important to him, but it made his imperfections hit hard – criticisms about his body and health began to have an impact on his young mind. He came to think of his body as a negative entity, so even when he experienced a growth spurt in his fourth year at Hogwarts, he still believed he was the ‘fat kid’. Instead of looking in the mirror and seeing a healthy teenager, he saw his soft upper arms and thighs and thought nothing had changed. He was determined to make it change, so he began altering his food intake. At first it was a small diet, but by graduation he was one of the small percentage of male sufferers of anorexia nervosa. He will eat very little to nothing for long periods of time, and after binging to attempt to either replenish his body’s nutrients or please a family member, he promptly purges anything ingested. He’s been hospitalized for his condition twice and in therapy after both of those incidents, but even in his thirties refuses to accept he has a problem.
Amycus excelled in school and graduated at the top of his class. He idolized his father, who had climbed through the ranks of healers at St. Mungo’s to one of the top positions, and decided that his skills in Charms and Potions could be applied to a career as a Healer. When he was ready to write and perform the entrance test he passed with flying colours, and was a full-fledged Healer at twenty, at least two years ahead of the pack. His success since then has been staggering, having been promoted to Healer in Charge of his floor at the age of thirty-three.
When he graduated from Hogwarts he joined the ranks of the Death Eaters. Amycus is not the type to run into the street and start firing hexes off, which is probably a good thing seeing as he would snap in half like a twig if anybody so much as breathed on him from the wrong direction. Instead, his healing knowledge was used to the advantage of Voldemort’s army. He healed injured comrades and taught basic healing to those capable to make field missions safer. Eventually, he was assigned a special mission: reanimating the dead. Well, in a way. Supplied with whatever he needed and lent books of Dark Magic from far, far back, he was given the task of finding a replenishable corps of corpses. Eventually he devised a way to sever the soul from ‘patients’ (often homeless Mudbloods), essentially turning them into vessels for commands. There were obvious issues with this – they could savage a group of people, but were indiscriminate in whom they attacked and some of Voldemort’s ranks were injured in the beginning.
Amycus did not join the Black Caps with the new government. He remains a Death Eater, but one with little to do now that his master is no longer in command.
personality
First impression: Work-oriented, expressive, and driven. Potentially nice, but a little catty on the side.
Amycus was taught from a young age that were he to want any one thing in life, he would be sure to achieve it. As it turns out, he has wanted many one things in his life – and he’s managed to acquire the majority of them. He’s used to feeling superior to his peers and has a holier-than-thou air about him, and as a result he has a habit of dismissing people he deems not worthy of his time.
To say that Amycus has a quick temper would be an understatement. His patience is short and he runs his floor like a clock, expecting everything to work efficiently and as it should with no interruptions. If something dares to intrude on his schedule, he becomes impulsive and has no qualms with lashing out while not taking kindly to any sort of “let’s all just calm down now!” mentality. If he’s pushed further he can be vicious. He’s a terrible opponent who is constantly on the offensive, but he is not a physically threatening individual. However, he’s still not favourable competition – he’ll do everything in his power to come out on top, and he has no regrets about what he needs to do to get there. The moral of this story is not to step on his territory.
Ever since the days of studying in the Hogwarts library Amycus has been a workaholic. ‘Overtime’ may as well be his middle name, as the few relationships in his past have ended because of his constant working until past midnight or simply staying at the hospital for days at a time to ensure that his work is done perfectly. He puts it above all other necessities – social interaction, food, or even simply going outside have no sway over his determination to finish his work.
His political views are strong in some ways, and incredibly frail in others. He was raised to see non-Purebloods as abominations that contaminate a long history of prestige, but doesn’t exactly know how to express the views. He joined the Death Eaters fresh out of Hogwarts, but didn’t want to physically fight. He doesn’t necessarily follow politics; he knows what he thinks is right, but not always how to achieve those means, so his actions are easily swayed and he sometimes mimics what his peers say or do to make it seem as though he knows what he’s talking about. He can’t smply ignore the ongoing because he feels he has a duty to do something, he just doesn’t know what.
Habits: Fidgeting while speaking or thinking; touching people’s arms, shoulders, or hands while speaking to them; a cycle of starving, binging, and purging; impatience; not tolerating ‘stupidity’; needing things to be in order (his order); demanding to have what he wants; wearing sweaters in mild temperatures; mood swings; using his arms and a very expressive face when he speaks; claiming he’s asexual; deeming people unworthy of his time.
Regarding Necromancy: Upon first impression Amycus is a perfectly sane citizen of the most glorious Pan-European Ministry. However, upon a closer look, it's apparent that something is off with him. The reason he's in his area of healing is that the human threshold for pain and sickness fascinates him. It's morbid, yes, but that doesn't make him a self-proclaimed Goth who slouches around reciting bad poetry. This is not something he would tell anybody, and considering that he'll chat to just about anyone about anything that's quite a feat. His passion can lead him to be cruel, and were someone to study Amycus at great length they would begin to notice small idiosyncrasies he has - reading the obituaries over breakfast, eavesdropping in on cases at the hospital, pouring over anatomy books when all of his reports have been written up. It's an extremely private matter to him. He dabbled in necromancy for the Dark Lord, so just HOW SANE CAN HE BE?! It should be emphasised that this DOES NOT extend into his sexual life. He is by no means a sadist or a masochist, and likely runs screaming at the sight of bonds.
appearance
Height: 5'11 Weight: 133 lbs. Build:Very light; he often forgets to eat when he works and he's anorexic. Hair: Soft brown and most often perfectly cared for as he's meticulous as hell about the greater part of his appearance. Eyes: Blue.
There is a fine line between style and gaudy. This fine line has been walked many a time by many a questionably-dressed character, but never has it been so obviously desecrated as it has been by one Amycus Carrow. He likes to think he's a great dresser, and perhaps to some blind designer he's right. He only wears the best of the best when it comes to his wardrobe, but unfortunately his penchant for shiny fabrics and patterns never before conceived make it an optical health hazard to any who dare to lay their eyes on the glory of his closet. That being said, Amycus is a workaholic, so while he tries to dress his best, his clothes are also dishevelled on a weekly basis while he sports a patchy beard and red eyes.
Amycus has the body of a dedicated anorexic that fluctuates between extremes every couple of weeks. Aside from his build being skinny in an extremely unhealthy way, he also experiences the side-effects of his skin becoming pale one fortnight to normal the next; bruising easily; dry skin (including chapped lips: some people consider lip gloss a ‘homosexual’ thing to do, he considers it very much a necessity); and a body temperature that varies between regular and cold, requiring him at times to wear heavy sweaters during mild temperatures.
love life
Romantic status: Single. Sexual Orientation: Semi-closeted homosexual.
It took Amycus a very long time to come to terms with his homosexuality, except for the small, niggling bit where he absolutely has not done so. He's gay, but he's not proud. He finds ways to satisfy his needs, but he's never content with them. He's lived with male partners, but he never accepts them as having joined in a union with him, or even as lovers - he refers to them as 'flatmates' and insists he's asexual.
Every few weeks his mother tries to set him up with a high-society this-and-that woman, but the relationships have a habit of ending in shambles.
